Artist's Description

The plot of land that is now Bienville Square was established by act of congress on the grounds that it forever remain a public park. The land is the former site of an old Spanish Hospital.

The walkways, benches, Live Oaks, and a now removed cast iron fence were added in the 1890's, and this bandstand was added in 1941.

In 1905 President Theodor Roosevelt gave a speech to the City of Mobile here on the importance of the Panama Canal.
